About Horror Heroines

It’s been noted that scary movies often reflect the societal fears of the time in which they are made.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers from 1956 reflected a fear of communism in America.

Get Out from 2017 very clearly confronts the audience with fears about the treatment of minorities in a time of supposed woke-ness.

If this theory is true, what are horror films with women at the center of the stories getting at?

I figure that if these films are merely allegories for scary real-life situations, it must be true to some extent that women-oriented horror movies like Repulsion and Carrie have something to say about what scares us ladies.

Even when the woman is not the main character, I feel her presence and story arch often reveals something deeper about the subconscious and conscious worries we have at all times.

horrorheroines.com is a blog dedicated to explaining how horror films featuring women in lead roles reflect the historical and constant societal fears of the female gender in general.

My own illustrations accompany the character profiles, which include the leading ladies of films such as The Exorcist, Psycho and more.
